Helen Lenihan - Clinical Psychologist

Ka puāwai a pōhutukawa
He tohu o te raumati
Kia mutu te ngau o hōtoke
He oranga a tinana I nga hihi o Tamanuiterā
He pai huarere whānui
The flowering of the pōhutukawa
announces a movement out
of the dark and cold winter
and welcomes the healing of sunlight, the long days and warmth of summer into our world

Registered Clinical Psychologist
BSc (Hons), MSc, PGDipClinPsych, MNZCCP
Since registering as a Clinical Psychologist in 2005 I have worked in clinical and leadership roles across adult mental health, Māori mental health and addictions and not for profit organisations. I currently work in private practice and offer psychological services to people aged 18 years and older.
My practice is anchored in the values of ngākau aroha (compassion), whakawhanaungatanga (connection) and marutau (safety). I draw on knowledge from the fields of trauma, neurobiology, attachment and mātauranga Māori. Working collaboratively with people I strive to find strengths and evidence-based solutions that are grounded in values, committed action and mindfulness.
Over my career I have developed a passion for supporting people who have experienced complex trauma or those who are struggling with significant life challenges (e.g. terminal illness, relationship difficulties, grief and loss). I enjoy working with people who are looking to understand how their early life experiences may be impacting their current wellbeing.
I also value working with professionals who are experiencing workplace stress or are looking to enhance their career. To date this has included providing therapy, coaching and supervision for medical and legal professionals, the New Zealand Police, St John New Zealand and clients in management and leadership roles across a range of sectors.
I am a Supplier for ACC under the integrated service for sensitive claims (ISSC) and provide assessment and therapy to people who have experienced sexual violence.
Therapeutic techniques I utilise include Mindfulness based Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (MCBT), Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Compassion-Focused Therapy. I have completed 20 hours of training in Trauma Sensitive Yoga with the Trauma Centre Yoga Programme.
I am registered with the New Zealand Psychologists Board in the clinical scope of practice. I am also a member of the New Zealand College of Clinical Psychologists (NZCCP).
Sessions are 55 minutes in length and can be offered kanohi ki te kanohi (face-to-face) or through telehealth/video.
Please get in touch if you have any questions or if you would like to make an appointment.
Fees & Payment
Appointments (initial and ongoing) for individual clients are approximately 55 minutes in length. I will advise you of the fee when triage has been undertaken and an appointment has been confirmed.
Payment in full is due at the time of the consultation, payable by internet banking or cash.
Should an account remain unpaid after an appointment, future appointments will be postponed until payment is received. In the unlikely event that debt collection services are required, the cost of these services will be added to the amount owed.
Cancellation Policy
I appreciate that life is not always predictable, and that emergencies and last-minute changes can come up in your life. If you find yourself unable to attend a scheduled session, please give me at least 24 hours’ notice – this allows me to fill your scheduled time slot with waitlisted clients.
Appointments that are cancelled or rescheduled without 24 hours’ notice will be charged a full or partial fee. This is because there is insufficient time to offer the appointment to another client who may be on the wait-list for an opening.
Failure to attend a booked appointment without any notification will incur a charge of the full fee. This payment will need to be paid prior to future appointments being made.
Late arrivals
We all know Auckland traffic can slow us down and make us late. Please plan for delays and allow time for parking. If you are early, please make yourself comfortable in the waiting room and have a cup of tea.
Please note: If you are late to your appointment, your session will finish at the organised time. This allows for the following appointments to remain on schedule.
